Julia Carpenter is the second character to take on the mantle of Spider-Woman in Marvel Comics. She first appeared in Secret Wars #6 (October 1984).
Julia gained her powers after participating in what she believed to be a volunteer medical study. In reality, she was unknowingly subjected to an experiment involving spider venom and radiation, which granted her superhuman abilities similar to Spider-Man's. These powers included enhanced strength, agility, and the ability to generate "psionic webs."
Unlike the original Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), Julia's webs are not organic. Instead, she mentally conjures them, giving them a distinctive psionic energy signature and various applications, such as ensnaring enemies or creating shields. Julia Carpenter has served as Spider-Woman in numerous superhero teams, including the Avengers and Force Works. She also eventually adopted the name Arachne, later returning to Spider-Woman.
